VICTOR A. AFANADOR is an experienced trial attorney, commercial litigator and negotiator.  His experience includes defending municipal tort liability, police related state and federal civil rights, condemnation and redevelopment law, complex commercial litigation, employment litigation, and criminal matters.

Mr. Afanador has successfully tried to verdict jury and bench trials in civil rights, employment and redevelopment law matters. He has also tried municipal employee termination hearings before the Office of Administrative Law and numerous matters of many types in Municipal Court. He also litigated and managed the condemnation of sixteen properties in a single municipality.

In addition to his trial work, Mr. Afanador has argued a number of cases before the Superior Court of New Jersey, Appellate Division, in the areas of redevelopment, condemnation, municipal tort liability, and rent control. Some of those cases are Gina Marie, LLC v. City of Hoboken, 2011 WL 4771935 (App. Div. Oct. 11, 2011); Coelho v. Newark Bd. of Educ., 2011 WL 4345822 (App. Div. Sept. 19, 2011); Ryan v. Hoboken Rent Leveling & Stabilization Bd., 2011 WL 2348382 (App. Div. June 7, 2011); and Deegan v. Perth Amboy Redevelopment Agency, 374 N.J. Super. 80 (App. Div. 2005).

He has also applied his investigative skills in the class action area. He interviewed Spanish-speaking employees and prepared a report for the Court as part of the firm's responsibilities as Class Administrator for an employment discrimination class action.

Mr. Afanador's experience also includes serving as Deputy Director of Law for the City of Perth Amboy from 1999 through 2005. In that capacity, he provided counsel to the Mayor, the City Council, and City department directors on legal matters.

Mr. Afanador clerked for Judges Mathias E. Rodriguez and Frederick P. DeVesa, Superior Court of New Jersey, Law Division Criminal Part, in Middlesex County from 1998-1999.

Mr. Afanador was appointed by the Essex County Executive in September of 2005 to serve as a Commissioner on the Essex County Board of Public Utilities. He is a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association, The Association of the Federal Bar of the State of New Jersey, Seton Hall University School of Law Alumni Association, the Essex County Bar Association, the Passaic County Bar Association and the Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey. He is a 2003 Graduate of the Leadership Newark Fellowship Program, has served on the African Globe Theatreworks Board of Directors, a professional theater company based in Newark, New Jersey, and was recently selected to serve as a Board Member for Aspira, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to developing the educational and leadership capacity of Latino youth.

An active alumnus of the Seton Hall School of Law, Mr. Afanador was elected President of the Law School's Alumni Association, the first Latino to hold that position, for the 2011-12 school year. He also coached Seton Hall's Interscholastic Moot Court Teams from 2001-08 and 2010-11. Several of those teams reached the final rounds of that nationwide competition

Mr. Afanador was named to the New Jersey Law Journal's 2010 "40 Under 40" list of promising young professionals in the legal community. He has also appeared on New Jersey Monthly magazine's list of "Rising Stars" every year since 2006.
