Gary S. Lipshutz is a seasoned litigator who, before joining Lite DePalma, served for more than two decades as an attorney for the City of Newark in its Law Department, where he quickly rose through the rungs to First Assistant Corporation Counsel. Among other areas under his purview, he oversaw the Law Department’s Litigation, Labor and Municipal Prosecution sections, and was responsible for all City of Newark litigated matters.
Among many notable successes, Gary served as lead counsel on behalf of the City of Newark’s Department of Public Safety, Division of Police, relative to the Consent Decree entered into with the U.S. Department of Justice concerning institutional police reforms. Gary was lead counsel in litigation against the City of New York concerning its Special One-Time Assistance (SOTA) program; and also in connection with the U.S. Coast Guard’s investigation into the 2023 Port Newark ship fire.
In addition, Gary has significant trial and appellate experience defending civil rights, personal injury, and contract and employment discrimination claims.
Gary has been certified as a civil trial attorney by the Supreme Court of New Jersey since 2013.
